Take NOTHING: Returning to Jesus’ Heart in Mission
November 5, 2016 @ 8:30 am - 5:00 pm $50.00
Unpacking and Reshaping Ideas of “Service”
DO YOU LONG TO MAKE A REAL DIFFERENCE IN SERVING OTHERS?
You’re not alone.
Maybe you have volunteered at a soup kitchen or homeless shelter, or delivered Christmas gifts to needy families or gone on a short term mission trip; and at some point you have this thought or feeling that something doesn’t seem right about this. It seems like we are doing the right things but something is missing.
Church leaders and parishioners around the world are looking at what they have been doing – sometimes for years or decades – and questioning if what they have been doing is making any real difference. In some cases, the conclusion has been that not only have we not helped but we may have unintentionally hurt the very people we have been trying to help.
You’re invited to join others for a day set aside to honor and grapple with this. Our retreat is for those seeking to live out Jesus’ mandate to care for our neighbors in needwhile being in right relationship with those we seek to serve/help. Your facilitators will set a non-judgmental and encouraging tone inspired by real-life experiences of grappling with such truths as “When Helping Hurts” and the meaning of “Toxic Charity.”

WE’LL GROUND THE DAY IN TWO SCRIPTURES:
“Take nothing for your journey,” Jesus instructed them. “Don’t take a walking stick, a traveler’s bag, food, money or even a change of clothes. Wherever you go, stay in the same house until/ you leave town.” Luke 9:3-4
Let the same mind be in you that was* in Christ Jesus,
who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death— even death on a cross. –Philippians 2:5-8
